The link between infection and cardiovascular disease has been assessed by measuring the presence of antibodies against the pathogen. There are several mechanisms by which the immune response to a virus can result in immunopathology. Knowledge about molecular mimicry between infectious agents and human tissue could be used in clinical laboratory tests for early detection and prevention of infections-induced cardiovascular disease.
